12 Betting Mistakes Beginners Make on the Exchange (and How to Avoid Each One)
The betting mistakes beginners make on an exchange are mechanical, not cricket judgement. New exchange users lose money in predictable ways, and almost none of them involve cricket judgement: misreading lay liability, leaving unmatched bets open, staking too big, chasing losses, mixing casino and cricket money, installing a fake APK, paying a number from a chat, depositing from a shop or someone else's wallet, sharing an ID, keeping a dealer-set password, ignoring commission, and betting thin markets. Each has a one-line fix; together they're the difference between a first month and a first year.
- Source: patterns in our support desk's conversations, January–August 2026.
- The costliest single mistake: lay liability misread — users think they risked the stake, not stake × (odds − 1).
- The most common: unmatched bets left open that match later at a bad moment.
- The most dangerous: a modified APK from a random site.
- None of the twelve require cricket knowledge to fix.
Where this list comes from
Our support desk answers a few hundred messages a day. Over the first eight months of 2026 we tagged the ones from users in their first 30 days, and the same problems came up over and over. Twelve of them account for most of the money lost and most of the time wasted. Cricket judgement — picking the wrong team — barely features. What loses new users money is mechanics: not understanding how the exchange works, and not protecting the account.
Each mistake below has three parts: what it looks like, why it happens, and the fix. Most fixes are one sentence. If you’re new, read this before your second deposit; if you’ve been using BetPro for a while, you’ll recognise at least three.
1. Misreading lay liability
What it looks like. “I laid Multan with PKR 500 and lost PKR 1,500 — is that a mistake?” No. You laid at 4.00. Liability = 500 × (4.00 − 1) = 1,500.
Why it happens. On a bookmaker, risk equals stake. On an exchange, a lay reverses the roles — you’re the bookmaker, and your risk is what you’d pay the backer. New users assume “stake = risk” and lay outsiders at long odds without noticing the slip says Liability: 1,500.
Fix. Before confirming any lay, read the Liability figure on the slip. Size your lays so the liability is 1–2% of bankroll, not the stake. At 4.00, a PKR 400 liability means a PKR 133 stake. Back and lay explained has a full table.
2. Leaving unmatched bets open
What it looks like. “A bet I placed in the 5th over just got matched in the 18th at a price that makes no sense now.”
Why it happens. When you place a bet at a price that isn’t currently available, it sits unmatched — waiting. It stays there until the market moves to your price (whenever that is) or you cancel. New users assume it expired.
Fix. Check the Unmatched tab in My Bets every few overs and cancel anything you no longer want. Better: when placing, take the current best price rather than requesting a better one, unless you’re deliberately fishing. Live betting guide.
3. Staking too big
What it looks like. PKR 5,000 deposit, PKR 1,000 bets, “amazing” first week, empty account by day twelve.
Why it happens. PKR 1,000 feels like a sensible bet. It’s 20% of the bankroll — a size at which four losses in a row (which happen constantly) removes 60% of everything.
Fix. 1–2% of bankroll per position. On PKR 5,000 that’s PKR 50–100, which is below the PKR 100 market minimum for many cricket markets — meaning a PKR 5,000 bankroll is really a PKR 100-per-bet bankroll with no room for 2% positions. Either build the bankroll to PKR 10,000+ or accept that every bet is a 2% position and never go above. Full system: bankroll management.
4. Chasing losses
What it looks like. Three losing bets, then a fourth at triple the stake “to get it back”, then a deposit at 1 a.m.
Why it happens. Losing feels like a debt that the next bet can repay. It can’t; the next bet is independent of the last three.
Fix. A stake size fixed for the week, set on Sunday, never changed mid-session. And a rule — no deposits after 10 p.m. Our desk can enforce a deposit cap if you ask (tools).
5. Mixing casino and cricket money
What it looks like. A patient cricket bankroll built over three weeks, gone in forty minutes of Aviator between innings.
Why it happens. One balance, two very different speeds. Cricket settles in hours; Aviator settles in seconds. The same PKR 10,000 that supports a month of 1% cricket positions supports about fifteen minutes of impulsive casino play.
Fix. Separate amounts with a hard stop. If you want to play casino, decide PKR 500 for tonight, and when it’s gone it’s gone. Keep the cricket bankroll’s number written down and never let the balance fall below it for a casino reason.
6. Installing the app from a random site
What it looks like. “I downloaded BetPro from a website and now there are bets on my account I didn’t place.”
Why it happens. BetPro isn’t on the Play Store (why), so users search “betpro apk” and install the first result. Modified APKs look identical and forward your login to their author.
Fix. Install only from the link your desk gives you after registration. Check the version against the latest version page. If you already installed from elsewhere: uninstall, change your password, reinstall from your desk, check your statement.
7. Paying a number from a chat
What it looks like. “I sent PKR 3,000 to the number the agent gave me on WhatsApp and nothing happened.”
Why it happens. Someone with “BetPro” in their WhatsApp name sent a deposit number. It wasn’t a desk; it was a person collecting deposits.
Fix. Receiving details only ever come from inside a logged-in portal at the moment of deposit (deposit guide). Any number in a message, SMS or comment is wrong by definition. If you’ve already paid, report to Easypaisa 3737 / JazzCash 4444 immediately. Scam warning signs.
8. Depositing from a shop or someone else’s wallet
What it looks like. “Deposit not received” — because the transfer arrived under an Easypaisa shop’s name, or a brother’s.
Why it happens. Users without their own wallet, or with a Level 0 wallet that’s hit its limit, use whatever’s nearest. The desk matches deposits on sender name; a mismatch means a manual hold.
Fix. One wallet, in your name, upgraded once (biometric, five minutes). Deposit from its app. Every deposit credits in minutes, every withdrawal goes back to it. Requirements.
9. Sharing an ID
What it looks like. Four friends on one login, then “my account is suspended”.
Why it happens. Splitting a deposit seems efficient. But logins from four devices in four areas, and deposits from four names, are exactly what the panel flags as a compromised or resold account.
Fix. One person, one ID. Registration is free and takes two minutes (create your ID); each friend deposits from their own wallet. If you’re already suspended, here’s how it’s restored.
10. Keeping the password a dealer set
What it looks like. A dealer created the ID and sent the password. Weeks later, after a good win, the login stops working and the dealer is “resetting it”.
Why it happens. Until you change it, the person who set the password can log in too. Most don’t abuse it. Some do, precisely when the balance is worth taking.
Fix. Change the password on first login — account menu → Change Password (steps). After that, the panel can reset it but never read it. This is the first item on our new account checklist for a reason.
11. Ignoring commission
What it looks like. “I won PKR 1,000 but only PKR 975 was added.” Or, more subtly, a trading strategy that’s marginally profitable before commission and marginally losing after.
Why it happens. Commission (~2–3% on net winnings per market) is small enough to ignore on any one bet and large enough to matter over a season.
Fix. Know the rate, and add roughly half of it to the implied probability you need to break even (odds article). At 2.00 you need ~51.3%, not 50%. Trade within a market rather than across markets where possible — commission is charged once on the net per market. Commission explained.
12. Betting thin markets
What it looks like. A “great price” on a domestic one-day match — 2.40 to back, 3.10 to lay — and no way to get out of the position once it’s on.
Why it happens. Prices on thin markets look attractive because the spread is wide in both directions. But a wide spread means you’re paying a lot to enter and more to exit, and there may be nobody to match your closing bet at all.
Fix. Stick to markets with visible depth — PSL, IPL, internationals, big T20 leagues. If the back and lay prices are more than a few points apart, or there’s less than a few thousand rupees available at the best price, it’s not a market for trading. Which markets have edge.
The pattern
Look at the list again. Two are about staking, two about mechanics (liability, unmatched), four about account security (APK, chat numbers, shared IDs, dealer passwords), two about payments (shop deposits, commission), one about market choice, one about discipline. Not one is “you picked the wrong team.” Cricket judgement is the least important skill in a new user’s first month; process is everything.
A first-month plan that avoids all twelve
- Create your ID on the portal, so you set the password yourself. (10)
- Deposit from your own upgraded wallet, from the details inside the portal. (7, 8)
- Install the app from the link your desk sends. (6)
- Write down a bankroll and this week’s 1% / 2% stakes. (3, 4)
- Bet only Match Odds and the 6-over session on PSL/IPL/internationals. (12)
- Read the slip’s Liability on every lay. (1)
- Check Unmatched every few overs. (2)
- Keep casino money separate with a hard stop. (5)
- Don’t share the login. (9)
- Note commission in your weekly review. (11)
Ten lines. If that’s your first month, you’ll have avoided everything our desk spends its days fixing — and you’ll actually be able to tell whether your cricket judgement is any good, because nothing else will be in the way.
What a BetPro account in Pakistan includes, and how to get one, is on the pillar page; the mechanics of every rule above are in the learn section.
How to spot these in your own statement
Your BetPro statement (dashboard guide) records every bet with its market, side, price, stake and result. Ten minutes on a Sunday will show you most of the twelve.
| Mistake | What to look for in the statement |
|---|---|
| Lay liability | Lay bets where the loss was much bigger than the stake column |
| Unmatched bets | Bets matched at odd times — the 18th over of a match you’d stopped watching |
| Staking too big | Any stake above 2% of your bankroll |
| Chasing | Stakes rising through a session, especially after 10 p.m. |
| Casino bleed | A cluster of casino lines right after a losing cricket session |
| Commission ignored | Winning markets with tiny net profit after the commission line |
| Thin markets | Bets on matches with no depth — often domestic games — held to settlement |
The security mistakes (APK, chat numbers, shared IDs, dealer passwords) don’t show in the statement until it’s too late; those are prevented, not detected. The first three items on the new account checklist cover them.
What experienced users do differently
They don’t know more cricket. They bet fewer matches, in fewer markets, at smaller sizes, with an exit planned before entry; they cancel unmatched bets by habit; they keep one wallet in their own name and one login nobody else has; and they read the slip’s Liability every single time. It’s a short list, and it’s almost entirely the inverse of the twelve above.
